Advanced Obedience Training Made Easy

by Geraldine Dimarco

Advanced obedience is to a dog is what putting down the toilet seat is to a man, it takes patient training but it can be done. Dog obedience training is one of the most rewarding experiences between a dog and his pet owner. You are not just doing yourself a favor; you are giving your animal a happier and fuller life. Obedient dogs are well-adjusted, self-assured and mentally quicker. You can be confident in his behavior even if you leave him alone with other people.

The most important thing to remember in attempting to train your dog is to establish your role as the superior in your relationship. When he understands that you are his master, it is easier to teach him the commands he is expected to obey. Confusing the animal in this regard can be dangerous; he will be aggressive and strive to dominate you. Dont overcompensate and be excessively harsh to show you’re the boss; be firm, stand your ground and correct this unfavorable trait as soon as you see it rearing its ugly head.

Use a strong and sure voice when you give your commands. If you tell him to Sit!, carefully bring him your dog to the appropriate sitting position as you speak out the command. It will take a few times especially at the start of your training. But as the dog develops from basic to advanced obedience training, the dog begins to understand the patterns in your sessions with him and teaching him becomes much easier.

Operant Conditioning is rewarding your dog with treats or praise for correctly accomplishing the command. It is the single most effective way to train your dog; its what he understands. Praise your dog every time he does something right. Sometimes, this is easy to overlook but make the extra effort not to. Dogs get confused easily and recognizing good behavior every time will ensure that he remembers what is right.

Inversely, reprimand the animal whenever he makes a mistake. Do it during the mistake and not after so the dog will understand the error of his ways. Scolding him will also highlight the difference between what is good from what is bad. For instance, if he starts finding the unidentified dirt on the street interesting enough to eat, reprimand him then and there. Then put dog food before him to eat. When he starts eating his own food, be lavish in your praise.

Keep dog obedience training sessions short and sweet throughout the day. Keep doing the commands you want him to learn. This will drive the lessons home. Teach him at different times in the day so his obedience is not relegated to only a certain time and place.

The stunts movie dogs do are complex and impressive. They also all started with Sit. Begin with the simpler commands and progress from there. Patience and consistency are your best tools for dog training. Use the same principles as you did in the earlier stages, and it will bring you success in the more challenging tasks in the future.

Now that youve got a working knowledge of a professional trainers guide to advanced obedience training for dogs, its time to roll up your sleeves, get Fido and start training!
